New Westminster homes and public spaces added a bit of sparkle with holiday lights.
From Moody Park to Hyack Square, festive lights add a glow on these dark days of winter. Here are some of the places you’ll find festive lights at city facilities as part of Shine Bright New West 2025.
- New Westminster City Hall (including a JOY sign), 511 Royal Ave.
- Queensborough Fire Hall, 1011 Ewen Ave.
- Queensborough Community Centre, 920 Ewen Ave.
- Hyack Square, 600 Eighth St. (a lighted tunnel)
- Sapperton Plaza (including a NW sign), 411 East Columbia St.
- Queen’s Park Stadium (as well as light poles inside the entrance to Queen’s Park)
- New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave.
While there’s no Christmas tree in Hyack Square this year, live trees are once again glowing with lights at Herbert Spence Elementary (605 Second St.) and Century House in Moody Park (620 Eighth St.)
As part of Shine Bright 2025, the city invited residents to submit light displays for an interactive map on the city’s website. Three residences are included on the map (along with photos offering a sneak peek):
- 321 McGillvray Pl. in Queensborough
- 830 York St. in Massey Victory Heights
- 572 Colby St. in Sapperton
Some New West residents have also let the Record know about residences in their neighbourhoods they recommend you check out this holiday season.
West End resident Ray Wall recommends that residents check out his neighbour’s annual display.
“Every year my neighbour at 526 16th St. puts up a great display and has been doing it for nearly 20 years and they do a great job of it,” he said in an email to the Record.
That’s the same street where a West End resident has once again gone all out with lights. You’ll find it on 16th Street, just off of Eighth Avenue.
A perennial favourite on the Christmas lights tour is the home at 609 Robson Ave., which is always decorated to the hilt for the holidays. It’s located just off of Sixth Street; if driving, you’re advised to park on Sixth Street as this small street between Third Avenue and Queens Avenue can be a bit tight to manoeuvre.
New West resident Melanie Fontana encourages residents to check out the lights on the patio of a second-floor condo at the corner of Seventh Street Gloucester Street in the Brow of the Hill. Along with the icicle lights and stars that are up all year long, she said some extra lights go up for the holidays.
While they’re in the neighbourhood, Fontana said folks can check out a nearby house on Seventh Street that has “all kids of pretty lights.” It’s on Seventh Street, heading towards Sixth Avenue.
Another New West resident suggested you check out “a really good Christmas display” in the Massey Heights neighbourhood. It’s located at the corner of Churchill Avenue and Massey Street.
Some New West homes may not have the most over-the-top light displays, but many of the folk in the go all out to light up the night. Seventh Avenue (200 to 400 blocks), Fourth Street (200 block), Third Avenue (from First to Fifth streets), and College Court (just off First Street across from Queen’s Park) are all looking pretty festive this year.
As always, Uptown New West is aglow with light displays at the entrance to Royal City Centre, a Christmas tree atop Waves Coffee House, and starbursts on poles through the uptown commercial area.
