New Westminster-Burnaby MP Peter Julian will be in the hunt for a seventh term in Ottawa whenever the next federal election is called.
Julian filed his official paperwork with the party last month and was nominated at an online meeting on Thursday, Dec. 3.
The most recent federal election was held on Oct. 21, 2019, meaning there are still nearly four years left in the current Liberal government’s potential time in office.
A press release from Julian’s office noted the election could still be “months away,” but if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calls a snap election this spring, Julian’s name will be on the ballot.
Julian, who currently serves as house leader and finance critic in the federal NDP caucus, was first elected in 2004.
The release notes that his margins of victory have been consistently growing since his first 300-vote win. In 2006, he won with a 4,000-vote margin, following that up with 6,000- and 7,000-vote margins in 2008 and 2011, an 8,000-vote margin in 2015 and an 11,000-vote margin last fall.
Julian is the first federal NDP member to be nominated to run again.
“It has been the honour of my life to represent this wonderful community,” Julian said in the press release. “Since the very beginning, I’ve been proud to fight for people and the help they need to make their lives better, and I’m proud to continue that fight.”
