It may be the dog days of summer, but it's not too early to start planning for your Thanksgiving weekend.
Olympic gold medal curling champion Kevin Martin is scheduled to return to the Royal City for the 12th annual Westcoast Curling Classic, which will be held from Oct. 6 to 10 at the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster.
Teams from Finland, Russia, Japan and the United States join former Canadian and world champion Kevin Koe as part of the field that will vie for thousands of dollars in cash prizes.
The action kicks off on Oct. 6 when junior curlers from the Lower Mainland play and learn with some of the professional curlers. This is followed by a cash Skins Game featuring Martin's team and the Finnish national team skipped by Kasper Hakunti.
The main event gets underway on Friday morning with the final games being played on Monday afternoon.
Last year's event attracted followers from throughout the region. More than 3,000 spectators watched 16 draws (88 games) leading up to the final match between Martin and Koe, with Martin emerging a 6-4 winner.
Companies interested in getting involved in this year's event are advised there are still sponsorship opportunities available.
