Arrest: A suspect has been arrested after allegedly wielding a knife and threatening to kill another person at Columbia Square plaza in New Westminster Tuesday.

A man who allegedly brandished a knife and threatened to kill another person at Columbia Square plaza on Tuesday is now facing charges.

The New Westminster Police Department reports that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident that took place at about noon on Tuesday.

Officers were called to the plaza after a man reported a person "brandishing a knife and threatening to kill him," an NWPD press release reports.

Police responded and located a person who matched the description of the suspect. He was arrested and taken into custody at the police cells, the release reports.

Police are fowarding multiple charges to Crown counsel: one count of assault with a weapon, one of uttering threats and two counts of breach of probation.

“This suspect has multiple court-ordered conditions, and because of the diligence of the public in reporting his behaviour to police, our officers were able to identify him and recommend the appropriate charges,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver, the NWPD's media relations officer, in a press release. “We strive to ensure that our city is safe for everyone to enjoy, and we want to thank the public for their assistance in working towards that goal.”

Anyone with information connected to the incident is asked to contact the NWPD at 604-525-5411.
