How does the Fraser River make food possible? That’s a question being explored at this month’s Super Saturdays event at Fraser River Discovery Centre.

Held on the last Saturday of every month, Super Saturdays is a series of public programs providing family-friendly activities. Each month focuses on a different topic related to the Mighty Fraser.

“The Fraser Valley basin is full of fertile farms and fabulous foods, many of which we have the Fraser River to thank for,” said Stephen Bruyneel, FRDC’s director of external relations and development. “Families are invited to join us on Aug. 27 to learn about some of them as part of our next Super Saturdays.”

At this month’s event, Fraser River Discovery Centre staff will help guests learn about these foods, with a focus on such topics as:

* Indigenous fishing techniques. This will include a guided demonstration based on information found in the Our Bones are Made of Salmon exhibit, which was created in partnership with Musqueam elder Larry Grant and Stó:lō Cultural Advisor Dr. Sonny McHalsie

* The nutrients carried by the Fraser’s current with a “deposition bowling activity”

* A map showing the bounty of foods that come out of the Fraser Valley.

“Families with children of all ages are welcome to this event,” Bruyneel said in a news release. “And it will also be safe, as all activities are consistent with our updated COVID health and safety plan, including the need to pre-register.”

For more information or to pre-register for the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., go to www.fraserriverdiscovery.org. Pre-registration for Super Saturdays includes paid admission to the Discovery Centre.

Located at 788 Quayside Dr., Fraser River Discovery Centre offers a variety of programs and exhibits related to various aspects of the Fraser River.
