I applaud Mayor Patrick Johnstone's commitment to climate action, and am glad that he represented the City of New Westminster at an international forum on climate change — the UN COP meeting.

Municipalities control about 50 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions, which means cities and city leaders have a key role to play in addressing the climate emergency.

All of us have experienced the harms from extreme weather events caused by climate change: wildfire smoke from extended and more intense wildfire seasons, disruptions to supply chains from flooding, and deaths from extreme heat.

As a long-time citizen of New West, I am grateful for the leadership our mayor and council have taken on this issue.

I hope for even stronger climate policies in the future.
