A man associated with Lower Mainland gangs has been found guilty of assaulting a man on Columbia Street last spring.
New Westminster Police Department says its patrol members responded to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street, outside of the Columbia SkyTrain station, about 2 a.m. on May 29, 2021.
“When officers arrived they located a man suffering from life-threatening stab wounds to his stomach and back,” said a NWPD press release. “Over the following days, detectives from the major crime unit identified and safely arrested a suspect.”
Murid Ghulam, 27, was found guilty of one count of aggravated assault on May 25, 2022, states the NWPD.
“From the life-saving measures performed by the responding patrol officers to the detailed investigation completed by our major crime unit, we’re proud of the work done on this case,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar in a news release. “We are committed to working with our community to provide a safe environment for all; if incidents like these happen we are committed to investigating them to the fullest extent possible.”
According to New West police, Ghulam and the victim are both associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, but investigators could not confirm the motive behind the stabbing. The suspect has been held in jail since his arrest and will be sentenced in the near future.
