It’s that time of the year when barbecue nights start giving way to indoor pizza parties.
To mark the end of the warm sun-splashed days of summer, the New Westminster Hyack Festival Association (NWHFA) is bringing back its popular Farewell to Summer Fireworks Festival this weekend.
The day-long festival debuted at the end of summer 2022 with a host of entertainment options, more than 30 artisan vendors and exhibitors and a grand fireworks show.
"We have had lots of favourable comments regarding last year’s fireworks and there were many social media posts," said NWHFA president Penny Mclvor.
Since its successful inaugural campaign, the festival has expanded its entertainment offerings and included a family-friendly beverage garden this year, said Mclvor.
The boardwalk will be filled with around 40 vendor stalls, and zones for kids and pets, she added.
Among the list of vendors this year are those offering baked goods, chocolates, mini donuts, kettle corn and a variety of diverse cuisines, besides clothing, jewellery, craft items, pet products and more.
Attendees can try their luck at carnival games and take their tykes out to play in the kids' zone.
The market will run parallel to performances by artists including singer and songwriter Miss Shauna, retro music girl band Beauty Shop Dolls, Juno Award-nominee and recipient of the Vancouver Inspirational Latin Awards, Marlin Ramazzini, among others.
The live music gigs will continue till sundown and set the mood for a dazzling display of pyrotechnics in the sky — marking the city’s send-off to summer 2023.
The Farewell to Summer Fireworks Festival is on Saturday (Aug. 26) between 11 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. at the Westminster Quay.
The fireworks can be seen from the Westminster Pier Park, Front Street Parkade and Port Royal Park.
