With heavy snow continuing to fall in New West and around the Lower Mainland, City of New Westminster crews are actively working to keep roads cleared.
Main roads in the city remain generally dry and clear as the morning continues, with some snow still on side streets.
The city's engineering operations crews follow the city's snow response plan, clearing roads in priority order.
Primary snow routes are cleared first, with secondary routes following. Lanes are only cleared in response to medical emergencies or other special circumstances, the city says. The city's website highlights the priority order:
Primary snow routes:
- Keeping major transportation routes clear;
- Clearing transit routes, hospital and school zones, as well as city facilities.
Secondary snow routes:
- Commercial and residential areas.
If you wonder where your street or neighbourhood stands in the priority order, you can check out the City of New Westminster snow removal maps online.
Metro Vancouver transit service affected by snow
As the snow continues, TransLink has issued warnings that transit service may be disrupted, and some routes have been suspended. It's posted a slew of alerts about bus delays and rerouting — although New Westminster routes, at this point, are not severely impacted.
To check out your particular route, visit the TransLink alerts page.
What does the rest of the week look like in New Westminster?
Environment Canada says this morning's snowfall will continue, with further snowfall amounts of five to 10 cm expected this morning and afternoon.
As the area of low pressure continues to move across the south coast, snowfall accumulations will continue, easing off this afternoon.
The Weather Network says New West should see a high of 4 C this afternoon, when continuing precipitation may turn to rain.
Tomorrow, as we usher in March, we're expected to see cloudy weather with some sunny breaks and a high of 4 C. Thursday and Friday call for a few showers and warmer weather (7 C on Thursday, 5 C on Friday). As for the weekend? Well, at this point, Saturday looks like there's light rain ahead, while Sunday may bring — wait for it — a few flurries once again.
