A variety of charities will benefit from funds raised at this weekend’s shred-athon hosted by New West firefighters.
The New Westminster Firefighters' Charitable Society invites community members to drop off their papers for shredding at this year’s shred-athon.
“We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces at this year's shred and can't wait to hear from the community we serve,” said Blair Lasell, the society’s president.
The shred-athon is taking place on Saturday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at New Westminster City Hall, 511 Royal Ave. (Enter off Fourth Street.)
“This year's shred-athon will be a drive-thru style similar to our annual Christmas tree chip, entering off Royal Avenue and driving past the front of city hall,” Lasell said.
Papers will be shredded on-site by Shred Wise. All residents and businesses are welcome to attend this by-donation event.
“The funds raised will be used locally here in New Westminster for new and recurring causes such as, local food banks, educational bursaries, Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society, the children’s Christmas toy drive and the IAFF Burn Fund, to name a few,” Lasell said. “We receive many requests and try our best to support our growing community.”
The New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society is comprised of all current members of New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services. The society’s members participate in several annual fundraising events, including the shred-athon, a Christmas tree chipping, a toy drive and the Boot Drive for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
Community members can make donations to the society in a few ways, including in person at Saturday’s event and online.
“Filling the boots with cash is always welcome, and we will have our electronic tap machines on site as well,” Lasell said. “Online donations can be done through our New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society website; the donation link can be found at the bottom of our front page.”
