A Sapperton resident arrived home one evening to find a stranger in his basement and some of his belongings outside.
The New Westminster Police Department reports that a Sapperton resident called 9-1-1 at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20 stating he was the victim of theft.
“Allegedly, the man had returned home to find a pile of his belongings stacked outside his basement door and a stranger inside his basement,” said a NWPD press release. “The suspect fled after being confronted by the resident. New Westminster Police Department officers arrived and began searching the area for the suspect.”
According to the NWPD, officers were assisted by another citizen in the area who saw what they believed to be a suspect evading police. Police say the citizen provided police with “valuable information” and they were able to safely locate a suspect a short distance away.
“The person who saw the suspect fleeing the area knew something wasn’t right and called us. Thanks to the helpful information they provided, we were able to make this arrest,” police spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in a news release. “We would like to remind all residents that if you see someone breaking into a home, that’s a call to 9-1-1.”
Caleb Woodsford, a 37-year-old New Westminster resident, has been charged with one count of break and enter.
