New Westminster police are investigating a May 29 stabbing on Columbia Street. A New West man has been charged with attempted murder.

New Westminster police are still trying to determine the motive of a stabbing that involved two people known to have ties to Lower Mainland gangs.

A New West man has been charged with attempted murder in connection to a stabbing outside the Columbia SkyTrain station early Saturday morning. Another man suffered life-threatening injuries in the incident, which occurred about 2 a.m. on Saturday, May 29.

New Westminster police, responding to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street outside of the Columbia SkyTrain station, arrived at the scene and found a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. Officers assisted the victim, who was taken to the hospital by BC Ambulance.

A NWPD press release states that the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit initially provided assistance in the search for a suspect. Officers in the NWPD’s major crime unit led the investigation and members of the forensic identification section processed the crime scene – work that ultimately helped investigators to identify and locate a suspect.

“Detectives worked with our policing partners from across the Lower Mainland region and we located and safely arrested a suspect,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said in the news release. “The suspect remains in custody until his next court appearance on June 9.”

Murid Ghulam, a 26-year-old New Westminster resident, was arrested on May 31 and was charged with one count of attempted murder.

“Although Mr. Ghulam and the victim are associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, investigators have not yet been able to confirm the motive behind the stabbing,” said the press release.

The New Westminster Police Department is asking anyone who knows about this incident and has yet to speak to police to call the major crime unit at 604-529-2430.

More to come.
