New Westminster Police Department arrested a suspect after a local bank reported a man claimed to have a gun and demanded money.

New West police officers quickly located a bank robbery suspect – thanks to an “excellent description” provided by bank staff.

The New Westminster Police Department received a call about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20 from an employee at an uptown bank. They reported that someone inside the bank had claimed to have a gun and demanded money, before fleeing the area.

A NWPD press release said officers rushed to the area of Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue and arrested a suspect one block away.

“We thank staff at the bank who provided an excellent description of the suspect,” said Sgt. Justine Thom, the NWPD’s media relations officer. “Key details about what this suspect was wearing and a physical description of the suspect helped officers identify and arrest this individual within minutes.”

According to the NWPD, charges of robbery have been recommended against a 36-year-old New West resident. Officers did not find a firearm on the man when he was arrested.

The New Westminster Police Department reminds the public to call 911 if they witness a robbery in progress.
