New Westminster police want to hear from anyone who may have witnessed an assault in downtown New West on Tuesday afternoon.
According to the New Westminster Police Department, a man was assaulted and robbed after speaking with a group of people on Alexander Street about 1:25 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
“One man from the group hit the victim, causing the victim to fall to the ground where he was kicked, punched, and may have been struck with a weapon,” said a NWPD press release. “The same suspect brandished a switchblade and gave chase as the victim ran towards Eighth Street.”
New Westminster police officers assisted the victim, who was assessed by BC Ambulance, said the press release.
“This is a busy area of the downtown neighbourhood, and we believe there are people who witnessed this assault and have not yet spoken to police,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “It’s important that offenders of this kind of violence are held accountable.”
New Westminster police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to call investigators at 604-525-5411.
According to the NWPD, the suspect is described as a Caucasian man in his 30s with short brown hair, standing 5’9” tall and having a medium build. He had tattoos on his hands and face and was wearing a colourful shirt with a black jacket.
Alexander Street is a small street situated between Carnarvon Street and the rear of Anvil Centre, running parallel to Eighth Street and Begbie Street.
