New Westminster police are warning parents to make sure children do not share sexual images of themselves online.
The warning about online harms comes after the New Westminster Police Department was involved in three sexual exploitation investigations — in one week. That’s prompted a warning from the police department for parents and guardians to take steps to safeguard and have conversations with their children about online risks.
“Parents need to understand that when children are manipulated into sharing sexual images of themselves it may be very difficult for children to seek help afterwards for fear of consequences,” Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in a news release. “It’s critical that parents and guardians stay informed about online risks and have ongoing conversations with their children about internet safety so children will reach out for help and report these crimes.”
The news release said NWPD officers and members of the Victim Assistance Unit are available to help and support anyone who is a victim of sextortion or online luring.
The New Westminster Police Department “strongly recommends” the Canadian Centre for Child Protection as a resource for parents, youth, and children. Its website contains guides for parents, research, and support for caregivers.
Anyone who is aware of a child who is involved in self/peer exploitation that involves threats, coercion, or extortion, is encouraged to file a police report by calling 604-525-5411.
