New Westminster hopes some of its initiatives will catch the eye of the Union of B.C. Municipalities.
The city is making two submissions to the 2021 UBCM Community Excellence Awards, which recognize members that have implemented projects or programs that demonstrate excellence in meeting the purposes of local government in B.C., said a staff report to council.
“The awards are designed to profile promising practices and to encourage local governments to learn from the success of other members in order to implement changes in their own communities,” said the report.
Council has endorsed a submission for the city’s Seven Bold Steps as a best practice for excellence in sustainability.
“Staff believe the Seven Bold Steps for Climate Action demonstrate a compelling approach and effective method for approaching climate action, one which builds consensus around a descriptive outcome that we collectively want to achieve, applying a long-term sustainability lens that considers cultural, social, economic and environmental issues in planning, policy and practice,” said the report.
Council has also endorsed a submission for the city’s COVID-19 new normal staff committee as a best practice for excellence in governance.
“Under recommendations from the inter-departmental COVID-19 new normal staff committee, the city has, and continues to, adjust organizational procedures, staff work plans and facilities to comply with provincial health orders, and the ability to transition to a post-pandemic response and recovery,” said the report.
