The Arts Council of New Westminster and the City of New Westminster have embarked on a new partnership to operate the Anvil Centre Community Art Gallery.
The arts council will take the lead in developing and curating exhibitions at the Anvil Centre gallery in a three-year pilot project that's set to start in 2023.
The gallery, on the third floor of the Anvil Centre, features a rotating series of community exhibitions designed to support both emerging and established artists, in group or solo exhibitions. It may also include curated projects "that reflect the interests of the community and align with the city’s commitment to equity, social justice and truth and reconciliation," as a city press release says.
City arts services staff were previously responsible for all aspects of the gallery's shows. With the new partnership, city staff will still provide support for logistics, scheduling and events, but the arts council will take over curating and coordinating the exhibitions. Both organizations will work to promote the shows to artists and audiences.
The city says the new partnership aligns with its arts strategy, which encourages "active relationships, unique collaborations and partnerships" between the city, artists and arts organizations.
The Arts Council of New Westminster is a non-profit arts organization, founded in 1967, that operates the Gallery at Queen's Park and is involved in a range of other programs, such as the annual New Westminster Cultural Crawl, New West Craft, Last Monday at the Movies, the Queen's Park concert series and more.
