Flags at the New Westminster fire halls will be at half-staff in honour of a firefighter who lost her life fighting a wild fire near Revelstoke.

A firefighter with the BC Wildfire Service died July 13 while fighting a wildfire near Revelstoke, BC. Family later identified the victim as 19-year-old Devyn Gale.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends and coworkers of the firefighter who tragically lost her life in the line of duty while bravely fighting a wildfire in the interior of British Columbia,” said New Westminster Fire Chief Erin Williams in a statement to the Record. “Sadly, it’s a reminder of the dangers that firefighters face in many forms every time they come to work and the sacrifices they make for our people and our communities. The flags at New Westminster fire halls will be at half-staff until further notice.”

In addition to having sent some firefighters to help fight wildfires in past years, New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services has hired some recruits who previously worked for the BC Wildfire Service.

Flags have also been lowered at the Justice Institute of B.C. campuses, including New Westminster.
