It's on!: New West Mayor Wayne Wright, right, is taking on Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart, left, in a friendly wager on the outcome of Friday night's Hyacks homecoming game. The loser will have to wear their opponent's jersey to their next council meeting.

Mayors Wayne Wright and Richard Stewart are dropping the gloves, so to speak, as the two municipal leaders face off this Friday at Mercer Stadium.

In celebration of the Hyacks’ homecoming game against Coquitlam’s Centennial Centaurs, mayors Wright and Stewart have made a “friendly” wager on the outcome of the game. The mayor of the losing team will have to wear their opponent’s jersey to their next council meeting, and both mayors are confident they’ve got the win in the bag.

“It’s going to be wonderful seeing the black and orange at their meeting,” Wright said after hearing Stewart had Centaur jerseys ready for all of New West’s council.

“I think we’ve got a pretty strong chance. It’ll be fun,” Stewart added.

But former high school footballer Wright said the Hyacks are ready for Friday’s game.

“If nothing else, our team will do the best they can possibly do, that’s all I can ask, and it should be enough,” he said.

The mayors added the bet was a fun way of showcasing their mutual respect for each other, outside the boardroom.

The homecoming game gets started at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 at Mercer Stadium. For more information, visit http://nwss.hyackfootball.com.
