43C.
Yes, you read that right. That's the forecast for today right here in New Westminster, as temperature records continue to fall around B.C.
Which makes it no surprise that the local air quality index shows signs of deteriorating as the heat wave drags on. New Westminster's air quality currently sits at a 2, in the low-risk zone. But the current air quality forecast shows that climbing to a 5 (or moderate risk) by tomorrow evening.
The eastern sections of Metro Vancouver (Surrey, Langley, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge) and the central Fraser Valley are currently under an air quality advisory.
The New Westminster school district has closed schools for today in the face of the extreme heat and will make an announcement later this afternoon about tomorrow.
Families seeking respite from the heat should take note of extended water-feature hours at city parks. Spray parks are operating from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Hume, Sapperton, Moody, Ryall, Old Schoolhouse and Queen's parks. The Grimston Park wading pool will be open 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The city has also extended hours at the cooling centres it has set up at Century House (open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.) and Queensborough Community Centre (open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; pets welcome).
Meanwhile, the city is continuing to urge New Westminster residents to stay cool and check in on those who may be vulnerable to the heat wave. It's posted a list of tips and ideas online.
