Pattullo project drives traffic pattern changes on Royal Avenue this week

Underground drainage work means traffic changes for motorists in New West this week – but cyclist and pedestrian access will be maintained

There are traffic changes in place on Royal Avenue this week because of work on the Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project.

You may want to give yourself some extra time if you’re planning to drive along Royal Avenue this week.

The team working on the Pattullo Bridge replacement project is conducting underground drainage work along Royal Avenue, between McBride Boulevard and First Street. As a result of that work, some traffic changes are in place, while this work is underway.

Here are the traffic changes you can expect to see while the work takes place:

  • For vehicles travelling eastbound or westbound on Royal Avenue: One lane in each direction will be maintained.
  • There is no access to Dufferin Street from Royal Avenue: Drivers wishing to access Dufferin Street will need to use First or Coburg streets.
  • Right-in, right-out access will be in effect at Coburg Street, Bushby Street and Leopold Place.
  • For southbound vehicles on Bridge Connector using the Royal Avenue off-ramp, the left-turn restriction to Royal Avenue (eastbound) will remain in effect; access to Royal Avenue westbound will be maintained.

While the work is underway, pedestrian and cyclist access along Royal Avenue will be maintained.

The work is taking place Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The work started on Monday, Oct. 2 and is expected to last for about a week – but more work is planned later this month.

“Two additional weeks of work will be required in late October/early November,” said the notice.

Fraser Crossing Partner is building the $1.377-billion crossing that will replace the Pattullo Bridge. The new bridge is expected to open sometime in 2024.
