Pedestrians and motorists are being warned about potential impacts associated with upcoming work on McBride Boulevard as part of the Pattullo Bridge replacement project.
Starting in mid-June, the McBride Boulevard southbound slow lane between Royal Avenue and Columbia Street will be closed for approximately one month to complete utility work in this area. It will be closed 24/7.
However, one southbound lane will be maintained at all times and all turning movements at the intersection of McBride Boulevard and Columbia Street will be permitted,. Sates a notice from the Pattullo Bridge replacement team.
“Drivers may need to plan for additional travel time,” said the notice. “We appreciate your patience while this work is underway.”
When this lane closure is in effect, the west sidewalk on McBride Boulevard for this section of roadway will also be closed. Pedestrians will temporarily need to use the east sidewalk while this work is underway.
According to the project team, the majority of the work will be completed between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. on weekdays and between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Some non-noisy work will take place at night and on Sundays.
“Nearby residents may hear noise from the saw-cutting and hydrovaccing activities, as well as from heavy equipment including an excavator and jackhammer,” said a notice about the work.
Traffic control personnel will be on site to direct traffic as required. All traffic pattern changes will be well signed. Pedestrians will be detoured to the east side of McBride Boulevard when this work is underway.
The new $1.377-billion, 330-metre crossing of the Fraser River between New West and Surrey is expected to open in 2024. It will replace the current Pattullo Bridge, which was built in 1937.
