Police arrest suspect after store employee assaulted in New West

A suspect in an alleged assaulted was taken to jail cells at the police station after witnesses restrained the suspect until police arrived.

New West police arrested a suspect after a witness called 911 to report an alleged assault at a local business.

The New Westminster Police Department reports that a witness called 911 after seeing a seeing a customer assault a staff member of a local business on Sunday afternoon.

“The witness described seeing the staff member being struck in the face by the customer,” said a NWPD news release. “The passerby and another customer at the store restrained the suspect before police arrived and took the suspect into custody.”

New Westminster police say the incident occurred on June 23 at about 2:30 p.m. in the 400 block of Columbia Street.

According to the news release, officers provided immediate aid to the injured staff member, who declined transportation to the hospital.

The New Westminster Police Department is grateful to the two individuals who rushed in to assist the staff member.

“Customer service staff deserve a safe working environment,” NWPD Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in a news release. “The actions of these two citizens show they feel the same way. They were quick thinking and brave to intervene.”

Officers transported the suspect in the alleged assault to the cells at the police station.
