New Westminster police are continuing to investigate a case involving a man with a BB gun, a baton and drugs.

A police dog helped officers apprehend a person who was spotted holding a suspected handgun.

The New Westminster Police Department was called to the Lowe’s store in Queensborough at about 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, after staff saw someone outside the store with what appeared to be a black handgun. NWPD officers and the Integrated Police Dog Service attended the parking lot, where they located an individual matching the suspect’s description and took him into custody.

According to the NWPD, a 45-year-old Surrey man was found to be in possession of a BB gun, a collapsible baton and a large quantity of drugs which are believed to be methamphetamine, fentanyl and crack cocaine.

“Thanks to the quick-thinking staff who called 911 when they saw someone with a weapon,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar. “If anyone sees someone with a weapon, it’s important that they don’t approach that individual, be as covert as possible and call 911 right away. Providing real-time updates to police is tremendously helpful in taking suspects safely into custody.”

In an email to the Record, Kumar said the NWPD members involved in this file are still in the investigational stage. Once this file is complete, he said it will be forwarded to Crown counsel, where charges of carrying a concealed weapon will be recommended against the accused.

The New Westminster Police Department thanked the Integrated Police Dog Service for its assistance in responding to this call and helping to apprehend a suspect.
