A police dog helped nab a federal inmate who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest.
Just after 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 13, the New Westminster Police Department received information that a federal inmate had breached his conditions and, as a result, the parole office issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest.
NWPD Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said the man was arrested at a residence in the Queen’s Park neighbourhood.
“Our members located the subject, and when he was confronted, he attempted to flee,” he said. “Fortunately, our members set up containment in the area, which is where he was confronted by a K9 member and other patrol officers.”
The K9 unit and the service dog are members of the Lower Mainland District Police Dog Service.
“Upon seeing all the members, the subject surrendered and he was safely taken into custody,” Kumar said. “Subsequent to the arrest, the subject told our police officers that he wouldn’t have stopped if the police weren’t there.”
The individual remains in custody, Kumar said.
