Police flooded into Uptown New Westminster Saturday after reports of a daylight robbery at gunpoint.
The New Westminster Police Department got a 911 call at about 10 a.m. from a man who said he had been robbed at Fourth Avenue and Ash Street of his cellphone and wallet by a man with a gun, according to a police news release Tuesday.
"Police flooded the area and soon located someone matching the suspect description at Sixth Avenue and Eighth Street," the release said. "The suspect fled from police, and, after a foot pursuit, he was arrested."
One officer had to be taken to hospital after sustaining an injury during the pursuit, police said.
The victim’s cell phone and wallet were returned to him.
NWPD is now recommending charges of assault, robbery and uttering threats against the suspect.
“Thanks to the officers who located and quickly arrested this suspect,” NWPD Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in the news release. “At this time we believe the suspect is not known to the victim and that this was an unprovoked assault.”
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
