Protesters and police at New West city hall — for filming

Happy Face TV show films scenes at New Westminster City Hall.

Police cars and protesters are at New Westminster City Hall today – but it’s just part of some movie-making magic underway in the city.

Filming of Happy Face, a new TV series, is taking place today in front of city hall, which is serving as a building in Texas.

Dozens of protesters – include some carrying signs reading “End Wrongful Convictions” and “Free Elijah Carter” are part of protest scene being filmed in front of city hall. Actors portraying police and media are also part of the scene.

According to IMDB.com, Happy Face tells the story of Melissa Jesperson Moore, who at age 15 discovered that her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was the serial murderer known as the Happy Face Killer.

Dennis Quaid stars as “Happy Face” and Annaleigh Ashford stars as Melissa. (It’s unknown if either actor will be in scenes being filmed at city hall.)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the TV series is based on the real-life story of Melissa Moore, the daughter of a serial killer. Moore’s the author of the autobiography Shattered Silence: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer’s Daughter. (written with M Bridget Cook).

New Westminster City Hall is open for regular business today while filming is underway.

A filming notice stated exterior filming is taking place on Friday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., interior scenes will be filmed in city hall’s lobby from 5 to 8 p.m., and exterior scenes will be shot from 5 to 8 p.m.

Filming continues outside city hall on Saturday, May 11, with crews expected to have packed up their work trucks and restored the area to its pre-filming state by 9 or 10 p.m.
