Introverts may have something to look forward to in New Westminster.

Coun. Jaimie McEvoy informed council at its Jan. 27 meeting that some local introverts have been hatching plans to form a new group — Introverts New West.

“I have always found myself in the odd position of being an introvert politician, and I know I'm not the only one. But it is an odd position,” he said. “So, Jan. 2 was World Introvert Day, and a handful of us were talking about this — and celebrated World Introvert Day this year by staying at home ourselves and reflecting.”

McEvoy said the local introverts are trying to put something together for Jan. 2, 2026.

“So, stay tuned,” he said.

The Meriam-Webster dictionary defines an introvert as a person whose personality is characterized by introversion; a typically reserved or quiet person who tends to be introspective and enjoys spending time alone. The dictionary notes that introverts are typically more comfortable interacting with small groups of people rather than large groups.

The official website for World Introvert Day states that Jan. 2 is an opportunity for people worldwide to better understand and appreciate introverts. It noted the first World Introvert Day was held in 2011.

“World Introvert Day started when psychologist and author Felicitas Heyne published this blog post calling for a day for us quiet ones. Let's face it: introverts are a misunderstood minority. We live in an extrovert world and introverts often appear to be arrogant and strange. Which they aren't. Introverts just work differently,” said the website.

“And let's not forget that although introverts might be a minority, they are a majority in the gifted population. Most famous scientists, philosophers, artists and thinkers are introverted. Introverts shape the world we live in. But they also have to face specific health risks, job-related problems and often difficult relationships.”

As McEvoy said, stay tuned for more details on plans for World Introvert Day 2026.
