The Record is continuing with its popular Top Five Things to Do in the Royal City this Weekend feature.
1 Get to know the Fraser River at the 22nd annual FraserFest that's produced by the Hyack Festival Association. The July 23 and 24 event features entertainment, kids' activities, vendors and displays, a beer garden, fireworks and more. Residents are invited to check out the many offerings along the esplanade, as well as drop by the Samson V Maritime Museum and Fraser River Discovery Centre. For more information, visit www.hyack.bc.ca.
2 Get out on the Fraser River by taking one of the harbour tours being offered aboard the MV Native as part of FraserFest. The rides take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday and between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, rain or shine. Tickets - which are expected to go quick - are $5 for adults and $2 for kids. They can be purchased on the dock, below Inn at the Quay, during FraserFest or at the Fraser River Discovery Centre today (Friday, July 22).
(Friday, July 22). 3 Get a look at the future of women's lacrosse when New Westminster plays host to the bantam and midget national lacrosse championships from July 23 to 28 at Queen's Park Arena. A contingent of New Westminster girls will be playing on both B.C. teams. Games get underway this weekend, featuring teams from Alberta, Ontario and the Atlantic. The event wraps up next week (Thursday) with medal games getting underway at 11 a.m. and the closing ceremonies at 5: 30 p.m., following the games.
4 Get up close to the creatures at the Queen's Park Petting Farm. The facility, located near Rainbow Playland, is home to assorted animals including goats, pigs, rabbits and peacocks. You can visit them daily until Labour Day, but they'll be gone after that as they return to their year-round homes until next May.
5 Get your weekend started on a high note by having breakfast at the Waffle House. A local institution, the Waffle House family restaurant has been located in uptown New Westminster since 1954. Waffles are one of the restaurant's breakfast specialties, but the eggs Benedict is so popular that it often runs out on weekend mornings. The Waffle House is located at 636 Sixth St. It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday and for breakfast and lunch only on Sundays. Breakfast is served all day.
6 Get your entertainment fix by taking in the Shadows and Dreams Theatre Company's performance of The Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare. This free production is taking place at the Queen's Park bandshell on Saturdays and Sundays (July 23, 24, 30 and 31 and Aug. 6 and 7) at 2 p.m. Seating is on a first-come, first served basis. You're welcome to bring your own chair or picnic blanket and sit closer to the stage.
