This weekend in New West: What's happening Sept. 27 to 29?

RiverFest, Hyack Homecoming and Ukrainian New West Fest are among the offerings in New Westminster this weekend.

Festivals – including RiverFest, Ukrainian New West Fest, New West Comic Fest, and Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance – are among the offerings in New West this long weekend.

Along with festivals, this weekend’s lineup includes sports, arts and cultural events.

Friday, Sept. 27

Hyack Homecoming

Cheer on the New Westminster Hyacks when the varsity team takes on Handsworth Royals in this New West tradition. Along with some great football, Homecoming 2024 includes a family fun zone, a half-time concert, visits from the BC Lions booth/Grey Cup truck, New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services and Applewood Auto Group cars, and more.

  • When: Friday, Sept. 27. Pre-game fun begins at 5:30 p.m. and the game starts at 7:30 p.m.
  • Where: Mercer Stadium, 830 Sixth St.
  • Details: Admission is $7 for adults and $2 for students (free for kids). The gate accepts cash and tap. 

Returning Elegance: Romantic Europe Voyage

Enjoy an evening of classical music featuring Ukrainian pianist Anna Sagalova and a secret guest flutist. This concert highlights the Golden Jubilee celebration, marking 50 years of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of New Westminster.

Saturday, Sept. 28

New West Comic Fest

Check out all the action at the New West Comic Fest, which features 50 tables offering a mix of comic creators, comic traders and comics-related posters, stickers and more.

  • Where: Sapperton Community Hall, 318 Keary St.
  • Details: Admission is $5

Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance

Take in a magical evening of music when the 13th annual Mushtari Begum Festival of Indian Classical Music and Dance returns to New West. Some of the finest Canadian and Indian classical musicians and dancers will showcase their talents at this festival.

Ukrainian New West Fest

Experience Ukrainian food, games and activities, crafts, music, culture and more at the first Ukrainian New West Fest. This jam-packed day of activities culminates in a live music concert celebrating Ukraine's heritage, followed by an evening of regional snacks and drinks.

  • Where: Holy Eucharist Cathedral, 501 Fourth Ave.
  • Details: Everyone welcome. No registration or tickets required. All donations are welcome.

Journey Towards Reconciliation

Listen to Steven Seegerts from Urban Aboriginal Ministry, share in some Indigenous spiritual practices through storytelling and music, and enjoy complimentary bannock as you create your own prayer tie. It’s all part of the Journey Toward Reconciliation event, which has been organized by the New Westminster Ministerial Association. Community members are invited to bring a lawn chair to this event. A food truck will be onside.

Vision of Verity’s debut album release show

Attend Vision of Verity’s debut album release show, with guests Heyoka’s Mirror and Circle of Titans. The Vancouver-based trio – whose music is described as “instrumental progressive metal” – is celebrating the release of its album, Terra Firma.

Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29

RiverFest

Celebrate World Rivers Day and BC Rivers Day when Fraser River Discovery Centre hosts the 22nd RiverFest celebration.

Saturday’s lineup include a full day of fun for the whole family, including: the Family Fun Zone inside the Fraser River Discovery Centre (free admission); live music; the Lucille Johnstone Workboat Parade; and an exhibitor expo with an artisan market.

Sunday’s lineup includes activities at the Discovery Centre (free admission) and guided walks in different locations along the river (New Westminster, Richmond, and Burnaby).
