This weekend in New Westminster: What’s happening Sept. 20 to 22?

The first-ever New West Fall Classic and a screening of Highway of Tears are among this weekend's offerings around town – just one of offerings happening this weekend.

Hockey and football events are helping to raise money to support local kids wanting to play sports.

Fundraisers for KidSport New West, board games, gardening, and a children’s storytime are among the events happening this weekend in New West. Other offerings include the screening of a documentary on a solemn topic and the opening of a new production by Vagabond Players.

Here’s the Record’s rundown of some of events worth checking out in New West on the Sept. 20 to 22 weekend.

Friday, Sept. 20

New Westminster Hyacks

Kick off your weekend at Mercer Stadium, where the New Westminster Hyacks will play the Notre Dame Jugglers. Friday’s game is the Hyacks’ first-ever KidSport Under the Friday Night Lights event; the team is donating portion of the game’s proceeds to KidSport New West.

  • Details: Admission is $7 for adults and $2 for students

Friendsday Night Board Games

Meet new friends over board games at this casual gaming group featuring board games and party game fun. Friendsday Night Board Games aims to provide a cozy space to meet new friends and support other local gaming clubs, as well as promoting nearby community events. All ages are welcome, but minors under the age of 13 must be supervised by an appropriate guardian.

  • When: Friday, Sept. 20, 6 to 11:30 p.m.
  • Where: 527 Front Street Mews
  • Details: Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is a $2 venue fee.

Saturday, Sept. 21

Highway of Tears screening

Learn about the missing and murdered women who have gone missing along a 724-kilometre stretch of highway in northern B.C. when Amnesty International Canada, in partnership with the Moose Hide Campaign, presents a screening of the movie Highway of Tears. There will be a quick discussion following the screening.

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 21, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Where:  New Westminster Public Library main branch, 716 Sixth Ave.
  • Details: Free

KidSport New West Fall Classic

Enjoy a jam-packed night of entertainment (on and off the ice) at the KidSport New West Fall Classic. In addition to a charity hockey game between teams from New Westminster’s police and fire departments, the evening’s fun includes food trucks, a display of emergency vehicles, a silent auction, a 50/50 draw, first intermission on-ice action featuring players from the New West Minor Hockey Association and more.

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 21, 4 to 10 p.m.
  • Where: Queen’s Park Arena
  • Details: Tickets are $10 each (exclusive of fees) and can be purchased online. Proceeds will go to KidSport New West

Seed cleaning and bulky seed exchange

Get your newly harvested seeds ready for storage – or for donating to the New Westminster Public Library’s seed library. Gardeners are invited to bring seed materials from their gardens to clean together. Anyone having have large quantities of bulky seeds or have divided bulbs and have some to share can bring them to the event for an informal sharing of crops.

Sunday, Sept. 22

Family Storytime with Arts and Crafts

Join Kinder Books for a morning of storytelling and art at Sunday Mornings at Kinder Books. After a storytelling session, kids can get creative during a hands-on art experience led by local artists Clarissa Banos and Nicholas Brancati.

  • When: Sunday, Sept. 22, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
  • Where: Kinder Books, River Market, 810 Quayside Dr. (This event is in the community space in front of the Vancouver Circus School on the second floor)
  • Details: Free. Parents or caregivers are asked to book a seat for your child so space and art materials can be planned

To Sunday, Oct. 6

Mauritius

Check out the Vagabond Players season-opening presentation of Mauritius, a dark comedy centred around a 22-year-old woman who has lived a sheltered life caring for her abusive mother who just passed away after a lengthy illness. Warning: Contains mature content and coarse language.
