A tower crane is no longer needed for a development at a prominent New West site.
Wesgroup Contracting Ltd. applied for an exemption from the City of New Westminster’s construction noise bylaw so it can take down its tower crane at the end of October.
“To safely accommodate the disassembling of the construction tower crane at the work site, Wesgroup Contracting Ltd. requires full closure of Braid Street, between Rousseau Street and Brunette Avenue, for two hours to set up a mobile crane on Braid Street,” said a staff report.
To facilitate this work, Wesgroup applied for an exemption to the city’s construction noise bylaw on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 7 to 9 a.m., as well as a contingency period on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“This work is weather dependent, and, in the case of high winds or extreme weather, the disassembly of the construction tower crane would not be possible,” said the report. “To accommodate this possibility, Wesgroup Contracting Ltd. is requesting an exemption for Sunday, Oct. 27.”
A staff report said the removal of the entire tower crane is a two-day job, with work scheduled to begin on Friday, Oct. 25 and finish on Saturday, Oct. 26 – under “ideal” conditions.
“During these two days, traffic on Braid Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction to accommodate the dismantling of the crane,” said the report. “In addition, as the new building will prevent the tower crane from rotating 180 degrees, a full road closure of Braid Street in both directions of travel is required for approximately a two-hour period within one of these two days.”
At its Oct. 7 meeting, council unanimously supported the exemption to the construction noise bylaw.
