A Sapperton landmark is for sale if you’re in the market for a church.
The church at the corner of East Columbia and Sherbrooke streets – long known as Knox Presbyterian and recently renamed Trinity Sapperton – is for sale.
According to churchforsale.ca, the 16,000-square-foot lot is zoned P1 – Public and Institutional Districts (Low Rise). The listing said the property houses a 230-seat church that is 123 years old and is in “pristine” condition.
The listing, which does not include a price, states that the building has great exposure across from large park, two daycares, and a large eating area.
“Very rare opportunity, landmark church for sale,” said another online notice about the listing, which includes a $5 million listing price.
While real estate listings state the church was built in 1901, the City of New Westminster’s heritage resource inventory reports that the church at 403/405 East Columbia St. was designed by architect G.W. Grant in the Gothic Revival style and was built in 1891.
“Although the church has undergone many additions and renovations over the years, its original architectural beauty has been preserved. The original stain glass, made by Royal City Glass still adorns the church,” said the city’s heritage document. “A familiar landmark, it has a side steeple balanced by a large front gable, with Gothic head windows containing vertical pane subdivisions. The church maintains its architectural unity by echoing the simple geometric shape of the front and side gables in the steeple.”
