Burnaby novice figure skaters Danielle Wu and Spencer Soo led a podium sweep in ice dance at the Canadian figure skating championships on Tuesday.
The B.C. Centre of Excellence pair backed up their gold medal at the Skate Canada Challenge last month, winning the national championship title over two other provincial centre teams.
Wu and Soo won the free dance portion with a competition-best 66.41 score.
The Burnaby pairs' 96.47 total score was more than a seven-and-a-half point improvement over their win last month at the Skate Canada Challenge in Regina.
However, a slight deduction on the timing of their final lift cost them the national novice ice dance record set by centre of excellence skaters Madeline Edwards and ZhaoKai Pang in last year's novice final.
"Their long-lift timing was a little off, but that's how good they are," said ice dance coach Aaron Lowe. "For both days, (all three teams) went out and did exactly what they could do - amazing."
Runner-up Brianna Delmaestro and Graeme Gordon made the biggest improvements, moving up more than eight points from an earlier sixth-place result at the Regina skate to finish second overall with an 88.48 point total.
Alexa Linden and Tyler Miller won the bronze medal just a fraction behind the second-place B.C. couple.
Jaimie Clarke and Matthew Webb of Nova Scotia and Quebec pair Christina Carreira and Simon-Pierre Malette-Paquett failed to move off their respective fourth and fifth-place finishes from Regina.
It was the first time for coaches Lowe and Megan Wing to earn a medal sweep at the nationals.
"It was amazing. Last time we were one, two and four, so this is pretty cool," Lowe added.
Burnaby ice dancers Madeline Edwards and ZhaoKai Pang and Caelen Dalmer and Shane Firus were second and third, respectively after the short program at the junior championships.
In the individual novice results, four B.C. excellence skaters placed in the top 10, including 11year-old Eric Liu, who won a silver medal in the men's category.
Liu, who won the Skate Canada Challenge in Regina, skated second in the final group of six. He took the lead following the free program in which he scored 81.68 points and then had to watch the four remaining skaters before learning he had won a medal.
Short program leader and final skater, Daniel-Olivier Boulanger-Trottier of Quebec, surpassed Liu's 120.53 total score in the final program skate.
Boulanger-Trottier posted a winning 128.53 score to take the gold medal.
Liu got a scare from Central Ontario's Antony Cheng, who jumped from 13th in Regina the month before to third at the nationals, finishing 0.35 points behind Liu.
Adonis Wong of Burnaby finished fifth overall with a 105.46 total.
In the novice women's final, Kelsey Wong of Burnaby placed just off the podium in fourth overall with a 104.42 total.
Julianne Delaurier of B.C. eked out the bronze medal over her provincial counterpart.
Zoe Gong of Eastern Ontario, third-place after the short program, won the women's competition with a 72.33 free skate.
