The Northwest Giants moved to within two points of the lead in the B.C. major midget hockey league following back-to-back wins over the Kootenay Ice.
The Giants rocked the lowly Ice 9-1 at home last Saturday, before beating Kootenay 10-3 at the Burnaby Winter Club in the rematch.
Quinn Benjafield and Dante Fabbro broke open a 1-1 draw midway through the second period to spark an unanswered eight-goal run in the opening game.
Fabbro and Nash Dabb tallied a pair of goals apiece, while Benjafield and Owen Stout, with a goal and three assists, led the Giants in team scoring.
In the Sunday matchup, the Giants built up an 8-0 lead in the second period before Kootenay broke the shutout in the final minute of the middle frame.
Stout led all scorers with a five-point afternoon, including a hat trick, while Dabb also collected three goals in a four-point offering.
Benjafield added five points, including the third goal of the year from the first-year defenceman. Burnaby’s Keyvan Mokhtari also had a goal and two helpers in the win.
The Giants improved their league record to 12-3-1, just a win shy of the first-place Okanagan Rockets, which split their weekend series with the Greater Vancouver Canadians.
This weekend, the Giants travel to Kamloops for a two-game set against the last-place Thompson Blazers.
