The New Westminster Hyacks didn't start the B.C. senior girls AAA basketball championships exactly how they wanted.

But after Day 2, they have their winning mojo back.

New West put a hard-fought opening day loss behind them by trouncing Mount Baker 78-49 on Thursday at the provincial championships at Langley Event Centre.

The team put in a determined effort and led by 15 points at the half.

A day earlier, the Hyacks were edged 71-67 by Abbotsford in overtime.

It took a rally on both teams parts to get it to extra time, as New West held a solid 38-27 lead at the half. The Panthers responded right out of the chute with a 23-3 run to begin the third quarter. Down three points with seconds left, the Hyacks pulled people from their seats when Emma Forgie drained a three-pointer to make it 64-64.

Abbotsford however reclaimed the lead quickly in overtime.

New West now faces Sir Winston Churchill, noon on Friday.
