A New West lacrosse player is making her mark on the sport.
Lauren Black, who graduated from New Westminster Secondary School last June, has been attending the University of Denver, where she’s been making her presence felt on the lacrosse field.
Black was recently awarded the Freshman of the Year for the Big East Conference in Division 1 Lacrosse. She was also a unanimous choice for First Team All Conference and Second Team All Region in NCAA Division 1 lacrosse.
Topping it off, Black is now the record holder for most points for a freshman in a season for the University of Denver – ending her rookie year with an impressive 54 goals and 20 assists in 21 games played. Her team wrapped up its season last week with a 13-8 loss to Boston College, which is the Number 3 ranked team in the NCAA.
Here at home, Black has been selected to join Team Canada women’s team for Lacrosse Sixes, a new discipline that’s been created to fit into Olympic criteria. Black is one of only 12 athletes to make this team, which will compete for Canada this July in Birmingham, Atlanta at the world games.
