Dear Editor:

Re: Income gap is really a monumental chasm, Our View, The Record, Feb. 8. I'm not surprised by the news from B.C. Stats that our province scores so poorly on income equality. It's easy to see that some people and neighbourhoods are much better off than others. It's also clear these higher levels of inequality cause all kinds of problems for our whole community, from lower life expectancy to poorer health to more people in prison.

The Occupy movement is just one expression of the frustration people are feeling about the rich getting richer and the rest of us

having to struggle harder and harder. We need action now to reduce income inequality, and every government in Canada should be examining its policies to see which ones increase the gap and which ones narrow it.

Reducing inequality with fair taxation policies and quality public services are two logical areas to begin with.
