If you haven’t had a chance to drop by New Westminster Public Library’s recently-renovated main branch, I encourage you to do so.

In addition to several upgrades to our infrastructure (HVAC, windows, lighting, etc.) we’ve also enhanced access to digital media technology and resources.

When checking out materials on the main floor you’ll notice our new, easy-to-use express checkouts. Using RFID technology, these units change the way books are checked out – speeding up the process by allowing you to “scan” multiple items at the same time. You can also select your preferred language on these new machines.

Upstairs, we’ve implemented three new Creation Stations. Each station is equipped with large monitors and each is loaded with special programs for creating, editing, and digitizing media including vinyl records, photos, VHS, and cassette. Converting these to digital formats will increase opportunities for you to preserve and to enjoy them.

Located beside our Creation Stations you may have noticed our brand new technology lab. The addition of this space will serve as an incredible learning hub for the community as we ramp up our free digital programming. We will help our community build PC, job-hunting, business, and research skills as well as knowledge about our library resources through structured classes led by staff and community partners.

Kids are already discovering some of the new technology geared just for them. We have added programming using Sphero SPRK+ and Code-a-pillars which allow kids to have fun while being introduced to computational thinking and coding skills. We have also purchased a series of Launchpads - small hand-held tablets with educational apps aimed at kids ages 3-7.

Drop by NWPL’s second floor and ask about these new services and features and explore how this technology can benefit you, your friends, your families, and the community.
