Editor:
I am an immigrant. Having moved here a decade ago, seeking a different environment from a state with a socialist government, I now consider New Westminster my home. However, in recent months, I have observed some concerning behavior from Mayor Patrick Johnstone during council meetings, which reminds me of the authoritarian leadership style I hoped to leave behind.
It is disheartening to witness a lack of openness, respect and willingness to engage in constructive dialogue. Instead, I have noticed a trend of shutting down conversations, taunting opposition and even temper tantrums, which is not conducive to a healthy democratic environment. I strongly believe that leaders should prioritize respect, open-mindedness and the willingness to consider diverse perspectives.
Let us strive to foster a culture where ideas are welcomed, conversations are conducted in a courteous manner, and respect for differing opinions is upheld. It is my sincere hope that our leaders in New Westminster, and indeed leaders everywhere, embrace these principles and avoid authoritarian tendencies.
