Letter: Johnstone's win is not a "clear mandate" from New West

Getting 41.9 per cent of the vote from 27.3 per cent of eligible voters isn't a wholehearted endorsement, says this letter writer.

Editor:

Too often politicians politicize election outcomes. Unfortunately, mayor-elect Patrick Johnstone falls into this trap by seemingly misconstruing the electorate’s wholehearted endorsement of his pre-election platform.

While Johnstone won the election, which was good for him, with his receiving only 41.9 per cent of the votes, he did not even receive a majority of the votes cast.

Digging a bit further, the 15,923 total votes cast only represents 27.3 per cent of New West’s eligible voters. For Mr. Johnstone, whom I hope for the future of New West does well, the total votes cast for him only represents 11.4 per cent of New West’s total eligible voters, which is a far cry from espousing his agenda is a “clear mandate."*
