Editor:
I was appalled to read in your Sunday newsletter that the majority of council doesn't think their carbon footprint is any of our business. Your article suggested "putting the focus on personal responsibility rather than systemic policy changes is a mistake."
Firstly, who says it can't be both?!? Why can't you pass a bylaw about gas-powered lawn mowers one day and then recycle at home the next? This sounds a lot like "do as I say, not as I do." Shame!
I am reminded of my neighbours who dump Coke cans in the recyclable-but-non-returnable or don't squish the cardboard boxes. When they say "no big deal" I ask "What if everybody took that attitude?" Does council think we should ignore personal responsibility because one person can't make a difference? Tell that to Greta Thunberg.
My city needs leadership more than ever, and I would implore council to reconsider, and lead by example.
Besides, it's not like you have anything to hide, do you?
