Letter: New West needs a well-trained, well-equipped, and well-paid police force

New Westminster resident has no objections to police board involvement in NWPD annual report - as long as they aren't anti-police

A New West resident responds to a discussion at the recent police board meeting.

Editor:

This is in regard to The Record's recent question: Should the New Westminster police board have more input into the New Westminster P.D.'s annual report?

In my humble opinion, so long as there are no anti-police-type board members in the room during these discussions, there is nothing wrong with other board members contributing useful dialogue to these discussions.

Not so long ago, we had city council members who were hell bent on severely slashing police budgets, and there was idle chatter of defunding the police in some quarters as well.

I found this to be extremely disturbing, and I dearly hope these people never get near a police budget discussion, particularly now when our crime rates are going through the roof.

What the City of New Westminster needs now is a well-trained, well-equipped, and well-paid police force that doesn't have to fight city hall every year for a decent budget.
