Letter: New West residents deserve our own recycling depot

Recycling depot
The city's recycling depot, currently located next to Canada Games Pool, is being closed in early 2020. The space is needed as part of a plan to build a replacement for Canada Games Pool and Centennial Community Centre.

Without lessening the importance of the Canada Games Pool (aquatic and exercise centre), I have to question the seeming lack of importance of the recycling depot in its current location.

Some years ago, the council at that time recognized the ever-increasing importance a recycling depot would be in the community. Returning, recycling and reducing what was becoming increasing waste and its cost to the city from a financial and environmental point of view was a concern.

Hence, one of our most important and best-used city facilities – well-appreciated and in a central, easy-to-access location.

I do not believe this council thought there would be a backlash coming from so many people by way of a petition and, at the recent meeting, indicating the importance of the current depot.

I find it hard to understand that space not much more than a city lot cannot be found for the depot within the city in the current area or somewhere close by, rather than in some difficult-to-access, out-of-the-way place in Coquitlam.

I would hope that in spite of what appears to be a decision made some time ago, without adequate input from the electorate, the council would reconsider, in appreciation of what many consider a poorly thought-out move.
