Editor:

I fail to understand why our local school board would take it upon themselves to cancel the (police) liaison officer program in our schools to begin with, and then refuse to re-instate that program after conducting a parent survey which showed most parents are strongly in favour of retaining the program?

A school board official was even quoted as saying this: "The survey, unfortunately, presented significant bias in favour of the status quo,” and that the majority of people are not negatively impacted by the police.

Keeping the police liaison program in our schools is a really good way to introduce young people to the realities of what it is the police actually do, and why it is important for young people to not only abide by and respect the laws of our land, but to also learn to trust and respect the police officers who we ask to enforce these laws for our society.
