I agree 100 per cent with our premier's decision to remove the rental and age restrictions on strata properties.
I have been a strata owner for more than 30 years.
I have also been a renter many times in my life. Renters are not the great unwashed. In 2022 B.C., renters are teachers, nurses, health providers, single parents ... all contributors to our society. All deserving of a home.
And not all landlords are slumlords.
The role of the strata is supposed to be administrative, but many take on a more authoritative role and, as a result, there is room for plenty of dysfunction.
If you live in a strata that is perfect, I am happy for you, but the blanket approach that "all renters are bad and detrimental" is completely untrue.
Next time you are being provided all those services you need and enjoy, ask the person providing that service if they rent or own.
Back in '90s I lived and worked in Switzerland. At that time only 30 per cent of residents/citizens were landowners.
There are so many other ways of doing things. David Eby is on the right track.
