Letter: Why is New West paying for climate and environment issues?

This letter writer says some things are best left to the province and the feds.

A New Westminster resident questions city council's decision to spend $100.9 million on projects related to environment, climate and sustainable transportation.

Editor:

I just read your article about this year's city budget.

While I do see some good things in this budget, I am a bit perplexed by the Community First council members' proposal to spend  $100.9 million on "environment, climate and sustainable transportation."

I have to wonder what exactly does this proposal refer to, considering that we already have our provincial and federal governments who each have environment and transportation ministers with dozens, if not hundreds, of employees who are supposed to be looking after these matters on behalf of all Canadians.

One hundred million dollars is a lot of money to be shelling out for services we already pay dearly for at both the provincial and federal levels of government.

Perhaps council will reconsider this proposal, thereby saving New Westminster residents a whole lot of money that we already pay for?

Thank you.

Editor's note: The $100.9 million in question includes $46.3 million for the Sapperton District Energy project and $37.3 million for walking/cycling/greenway routes, as well as park improvements and upgrades to the city's equipment fleet.
