Letters: These New West councillors seem to want attention, not action

"Grandstanding" is the right word for these councillors, this writer says.

This letter writer isn't impressed with the way a couple of New Westminster city councillors are raising issues.

Editor:

I'd like to thank Chelsea Watt for reminding me of the word "grandstanding" in her letter to the editor.  It is the perfect word for the disappointing behaviour I see out of councillors Daniel Fontaine and Paul Minhas.

This week's last-minute complaint from Coun. Fontaine at the council meeting from April 17 is a good example.  He complained that "there wasn't an opportunity to compare" his (smaller) proposed tax increase with the budget being voted.  But this ignores the report prepared Jan. 30 — three months ago! — and presented to council where that exact rate is examined

I would love to hear constructive proposals from councillors Fontaine and Minhas. I am perfectly willing to believe that they may have good ideas on how to run this city.  I was happy they were elected and was looking forward to hearing what they wanted to do. But the way they choose to present their ideas seems only designed to get attention, not action.

Councillors are elected to work for the city, not grandstand; perhaps it's a subtle distinction, but I think it's an important one.
