Dear Editor:

Re: 99 and counting for local tennis player, The Record, July 25.

How lovely to read about Ed Gladstone and his active life playing tennis! My grandmother is 93 and also still lives alone. A common denominator in making it into one's 90s seems to be a passion for something that gets you outside.

For Ed, tennis has kept him in shape, social and given him something to do with his time and knowledge. For my Nana, it has been gardening. We should all take a lesson from these amazing people and be sure to engage in hobbies while we are young so that we have interests to peruse when we are old.

I have noticed recently, at least among my parent friends, that our ever busy lives leave us little down time to take up a hobby. We are often tired, out of shape and stressed.

If we want to not only live a long life, but have quality of life in our later years, we best tie up our shoes and head out the door. Thanks to Mr. Gladstone for the inspiration. Here's to many more years on the courts!
