Time for appreciation

Dear Editor:

As I rush to finish my last holiday preparations, I am struck by how many people in New Westminster are out there making a special effort to take care of people this time of year.

There are the public employees that we and our families connect with: the teachers who collect mittens and gloves so the kids who come to school without any can stay warm. The day care staff who create a place where - no matter how the morning went - children feel special when they come in the door.

The health-care workers who arrive to take care of overflowing waiting rooms despite the snow. The police and firefighters who are on the job night and day to keep our community safe.

There are the volunteers - they're gathering donations for Christmas hampers overflowing with New West generosity. They're serving meals to people without a home. They're creating some holiday cheer for seniors who are isolated and lonely.

And there are our local businesses who contribute to supporting our community - and those most in need - in so many different ways. This really is a special community, one where families are connected by these people who care and pitch in.

At this time of year, let`s show our appreciation for those who do so much to make it all happen. Thank you for what you do to make this such a special place to live.
